Professional Statement
I earned my B.S. degree in Elementary Education with Kindergarten endorsement from Ball State University in 1998. I received a master’s degree in school counseling from Heidelberg University, minor clinical counseling in May 2015.
For a moment, I would like to tell you about my philosophy of school counseling is rooted in play therapy and Adlerian theory. I believe that children’s natural language is play, by observing and participating therapeutically in play assists children in making sense of the world around them. Adlerian theory is stemmed in a therapeutic process of encouragement. This process of encouragement also makes the Adlerian approach so valuable to all those professions that concern themselves with the development and education of children - therapeutic education being one of Adler's central concerns.
I am an active member of ASCA (American School Counselor Association) in my local chapter. I adhere to the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) Code of Ethics and am accountable to my supervisors, national, state and local associations.
The information students share with me will be held in confidence except for the following reasons: my supervisors need to be aware of the nature of the issue to provide the best care for every student; student requests, in writing, that I share the information with a specified person; the student shares information that implies s/he could harm themselves or someone else, putting someone in imminent danger. In these situations a caregiver has a legal right to this information.
